Gifts That Give Twice," is the title of an article I wrote on November 20th about holiday gifts from Etsy.com sellers that benefit charity. The article struck a chord. It received (and continues to receive) tremendous interest from people looking to give more meaningful gifts.
Since that date I've continued to hear from Etsy sellers who donate to charity, so I'm adding a follow up. To read the original article highlighting sixteen additional shop owners involved in extremely creative grassroots fundraising efforts, including me, check the original article at http://personaltreasures.blogspot.com/2007/11/give-gifts-that-give-twice-holiday.html

I wonder how many people actually donate when they say they will... just wondering out loud. I know the EFA team (I'm a new member) asks for receipts and donation worksheets. They/we also donate items to the EFA store. Everything in it is donated.
I'm starting with the assumption that people are honest.
And if you take the time to visit the stores of the people featured in this article, to learn more about their involvements in their charities, I think you will be moved by their commitment.
In an article like this, I am writing very briefly about just a few of the Etsy artisans whose values include supporting charity. It's a value I share and am happy to support.

Dear Phyllis,
Thanks so much for mentioning my etsy store in your post about Etsy sellers who donate sales proceeds to charity. I have four close relatives who have died from or are currently ill with Alzheimer's Disease, so it gives me some sense of peace to create art and at the same time support research for treating the disease. I have mentioned your post in my blog as a thank you for yours! I'm at janetcatmull.blogspot.com. Thanks so much for your thoughtful article and I hope Etsy sees a surge in sales for charity.
I made a decision this year to try and make at least 75% of my holiday gifts - give back gifts. I love the bracelets from Doctors without borders, this is a cause that I have supported in the past. I also found something new on the web "the friendship stone" they are amazing Tiger's eye stones packaged perfectly for a gift to friends and family. the website is really nice, some of the stories written there are so captivating. This company as made a committment to getting running water to the homes in the village that the stones are mined. I think that this is another great project. I recieved the stones that I ordered on Friday and they are stunning. I bought them as stocking stuffers because of the price and size - but they are much more than that. The website is www.thefriendshipstone.com.
Dear Phyllis,
Thank you for featuring MonsterBug Blankets in your blog post. It is exciting to see my store posted elsewhere! And wonderful to see where and why others give part of their proceeds to charity.
Best Wishes,
Jennifer Holmes

Phyllis,
You are an angel for showcasing "charity" items! So far from Etsy I have $10; and personally collected several bags of food for our local Salvation Army...
It is sad that people have to doubt if someone is really donating to charity, due to SOME that lie and cheat - I believe that people are good and make sure I know who I am working with when doing volunteer/charity/donations - a little investigation goes a long way.
I have been running charity auction on eBay for many years, with little success and thought I would try Etsy as well - there is usually not many sales for donations - I am not that well known online! But, I do not give up and will continue on - one day I will be famous (LOL) and will have bigger sales for Charity!!
Many hugs to all and blessings!!
XoX
Sabine
